These rights are guaranteed by the constitution of Sri Lanka and embodied in the International covenants.

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity. Human rights, as commonly understood, are the rights that every human being is entitled to enjoy freely. Meaning of Human rights are different to different people and they are not fixed and new rights are recognized and enforced from time to time. Only persons completely familiar with the most recent developments regarding the expanding horizons of Human Rights can uphold human rights better than others. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. Human rights are often expressed and guaranteed by law in the constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. In the forms of treaties, customary international law, general principles and other sources of international law and International human rights law lays down obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of all the people.
